May 16,1929
     The first Academy awards are held at Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel.250 people attended.Tickets costs US$5 and the event lasted ten minutes..!Best Picture went to silent movie Wings.

1935
    After winning the Best Actor Award for It Happened one Night,Clark GAble makes the shortest ever acceptance speech,saying,"Thank You."

1940
    Hattie McDaniel becomes the first Black person to be nominated and bursts into tears when she wins her Oscar for Best Supporting Actress as the maid Mammy in Gone With The Wind.

1970
   Midnight Cowboy wins Best Picture-the only X rated film to do so.

1974
   For the only time in her career,Katharine Hapburn agrees to attend the ceremony to present an honorary award.After few minutes on the stage she dashes into a limo.She  holds the record for the most acting oscars-4.

1992
   After winning an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor,Jack Palance,73,drops to the floor and does one armed push ups to prove he can still compete with younger actors.Another elder was honoured that year but he was too ill to go and accept it.It was Satyajit Ray for lifetime achievement.

1998
   After winning 11 oscars for Titanic James Cameron announces."I'm top of the world."

2009
   Slumdog Millionaire showers Oscars on A.R.Rahman and Gulzar.Smile Pinki,also set in India,got one for Best Documentary.
